Submit 24 - 48 Digital Images

Each year Eureka Reference Guide publishes contributing photographers who, like you, love their subject matter. Whether you've taken photographs of plants from your own garden, at botanical gardens or on garden tours, submit your work to Eureka for possible publication.

Submission Deadline: September 15

Carefully Review these Three Steps since there Are Changes

1. Take or save your digital images in the .JPG format at your camera's highest resolution (six megapixal, or greater, cameras set on .JPG and at highest quality possible) keeping good records of cultivar names and the gardens in which the images were taken. Selected images may be used throughout Eureka Reference Guides and other Eureka Gardening Collection publications and/or marketing. Also note that Eureka Garden Collection can take no responsibility for lost or damaged property.

2. Select your best 24 to 48 images naming each image file with the official AHS registered name, place on a CD. Be sure to then open your CD to make sure that you successfully placed the files on the CD and are not submitting a blank CD. We do NOT return digital submissions, CD's nor proof sheets. We do NOT accept digital prints other than as your proof sheet. Your submission enters your work in the cover competition.

3. Complete the Photo Release Form below and submit it along with your $25 submission fee by the deadline PLUS the following:
+ Include a Color Contact Proof Sheet showing small, low-resolution images of each photo placed on the CD. Be sure that the images are good quality because your inclusion in Eureka will be based on an image evaluation from your proof sheet. Each proof sheet should contain from 6 to 12 images per 8.5 by 11 page. Be sure that each image is named on the CD AND ON THE PROOF SHEET with the cultivar names.
+ Include a
Photo Log Sheet with four fields of information: (1) Image number for each photo which matches those numbers on the CD and proof sheet(s), (2) Official AHS cultivar name, (3) Garden owner in which the image was taken and (4) City, State in which the garden is located. Include this photo log on your CD and/or email this photo log to me at bloom@GardenEureka.com.

Taking and Selecting Quality Daylily Images for Publication

During the peak garden display, grab your camera and capture the most stunning clump or individual daylily portraits. Look at the plant with your unique eye. Think beyond the single bloom that looks flat-faced into the camera. Look for a couple or more blooms where one photo can show off the plant from different angles.

Remember to note the registered name of the daylily and garden for photo identification upon submission. Eureka strongly supports cultivar registration and we feature ONLY those plants that are part of the society's registration process - American Hemerocallis Society.

Link to our Photo Design article and see how your photos will be better composed and more likely selected for publication by Eureka. Here, you will learn about designing effective and beautiful photos. Start with the basic elements of design and move through to achieving a good sense of compositional unity as you plan your photos.

Important: Don't Eliminate Your Images from Consideration

Don't submit too few photos but be sure and submit 24 to 48 images. Too often we reject a photographer's submissions because he or she sends in one or two images. We try to feature a photographer over two to four pages. We need several of your photos to choose from because we may have to reject many of your images for various reasons mentioned below.
Don't send only horizontal images. Different layout needs require horizontal or vertical selections so take and submit both.
Don't submit the most common daylilies. Selections of a given cultivar from another photographer or advertiser already chosen can eliminate one or more of your images from consideration so try to not submit images of cultivars that everyone else is seeing. Eureka prefers to print images of cultivars not previously published by us. Past publishing frequency of popular but over-published cultivars may mean that your outstanding image of these cultivars will not be considered.
Don't "Photoshop" or crop your photos too tightly as you take the image with your camera. This prevents us from using the photo for a variety of layout options. We can't bleed the photo off the page if your framing has placed the flower petals on the edge of the photo. And do NOT crop your image further than the camera image in a photo editing program. Also, we want the flowers' true colors so do NOT push the color saturation or intensity.
Don't set your digital camera to frame the image with a rounded or squared border. We would have to take it out and that takes too much time.
Don't date stamp or title your digital images with numbers or lettering overlaying the photograph. Again, for us to remove the lettering takes too much time.
Don't submit low-resolution images. Each .JPG image should be taken at highest image quality on a six megapixal minimum camera. When we open your .JPG file an decompress it, it should be at least six megabytes in size.
